Adding nannies and au pairs to car insurance policies can send premiums spiralling, research has shown.
Data complied by Confused.com found that parents who add these staff to their policies face an average increase of £671, which is 184 per cent higher than the cost of insuring the primary driver.
However, in some cases the increase was even punitive, with many charging up to £1,405 to extend the scope of the cover.
Simon Lamble, product director at the price comparison site, said: "An increasing number of people are employing a nanny or au pair to look after their children while they continue to work. However, the cost of insuring a nanny or an au pair on the family car is often extortionate and not all child carers will have their own transportation.
He added: "If a car is essential, then it is very important to shop around for the best deal rather than accepting the first price your insurance provider gives you."
More Than was named as the insurer which charges least for adding staff to car insurance cover.
